Wallaby and Swiffy – The Flash to HTML5 Converters are in Town!

We’ve been waiting for this for a very long time as Apple still shows its unassailable hatred towards Adobe by not allowing Flash content on its iOS devices such as the iPhone, iPod Touch and the far-famed iPad. As most of the today’s website ads run on flash, it was pretty hard for the developers to get their fancy ads to the apple handheld device owners. And here comes, Adobe Wallaby and Google Swiffy to keep the first step forward to make the transition from Flash to HTML5. Of course, not all the features of Flash available in the outputted HTML5 but still it is very usable.

Google Swiffy Vs. Adobe Wallaby

  • The major difference between the two is that, we can modify the conversion parameters in Wallaby where Swiffy doesn’t allow that. Swiffy just get the SWF file and outputs it into HTML5.
  • Wallaby is a tool which you have to download to your computer for converting your flash files, where Swiffy is an instant online tool and saves you a lot of time.
  • Wallaby converts your .FLA files, whereas Swiffy converts your .SWF files.
  • Swiffy converts the SWF file in two phases. The Swiffy compiler processes the SWF file and generates a JSON file. A client-side JavaScript runtime loads that JSON file and renders it using HTML, SVG and CSS. It follows the Flash 5 implementation.

Both of them do not support all the features of flash such as filters and advanced ActionScript. And by converting them, we get an increase in the size. Thereby, in terms of performance, the Flash is much smoother and faster than the HTML5 converted output and  I believe these conversion tools will help Flash developers to stick with Flash Pro and enable their flash content on the iOS platform using HTML5.
