Tata Docomo Vs AirTel : Docomo is a Clear Winner?

Hey fellas,

I’ve been using AirTel as my primary mobile operator for about 3 years now and I hardly regretted in using it until I started to use Tata Docomo for quite a while recently.  First of all, I’m very happy with Docomo’s services with its cheaper tariff plans, faster internet speeds and good customer care support.  Therefore I’m writing this post with the differences I’ve experienced between AirTel and Docomo.

Docomo rocks because of,

Faster Internet Speeds:

I’m a fast-paced tech fan and I want my phone to keep up with me while browsing and streaming videos on the go.  I used to subscribe to AirTel’s 3G services every month which soon made me realize that it is too expensive for any average mobile consumer to subscribe to it.  I have a 2G samsung phone in which I have been using Tata Docomo and I should say that it is really fast!! Although Docomo doesn’t have its 3G service in Tamilnadu, its EDGE and GPRS speeds are blazing fast and comparable enough to beat AirTel’s 3G.

Better SMS Packs:

I’ve been using AirTel’s SMS plans priced at Rs. 60 which doesn’t give me more than 100SMS/day (Local & National) for 30 days (at the time of this writing, 200SMS/day had been the maximum as per TRAI’s regulations) but in Docomo, its Rs.38 for 200SMS/day (Local & National) for 45 Days. Being a heavy texter, I really would like to jump onto Docomo now.

Better Customer Service:

I’m not a fan of using Customer Service over the phone and for me everything should be made online so that I can waste no time in waiting to talk to a CustomerCare Representative.  As far as I know, my friends who had been using AirTel like me faced a lot of issues regarding customer care.  Some of them have not been addressed still by the representatives even after 3-5 complaints.  As far as Docomo is concerned, my friends seem to have a good contact with it over its customer care service.

It’s website is frequently updated with its new features and tariff plans, whereas AirTel’s website is still in the days of 7000SMS/day as mentioned in its SMS Tariff plans section.

Faster Online Recharge:

I waste no time in going to nearest store to recharge my prepaid mobile account and therefore I use Online services frequently.  Docomo’s Online Recharge site is direct, simple and elegant and it uses Net Banking, it is more secure and reliable when compared to other operators. One of the greatest benefits is that it gives FULL talk time for the money you pay and therefore there is no service charges. Whereas, AirTel’s online recharge uses Credit/Debit Cards and has no talk time benefits. I have to rely on third party services in order to use Netbanking for recharging my AirTel Account.

I’m still sticking with AirTel because of,

Better Coverage:

Airtel being a major player in Mobile service for a very long time, it has better coverage over Docomo.  At many places, I find there is no mobile coverage for my Docomo which I’m very uncomfortable with, even though it has a lot of features.

Better Social Network Support:

AirTel has always been a trend setter with its release of Fonetwish service for free Facebook access, Twitter support and other social services which are hard to find on all other mobile operators.

3G!! What could life be without it?

For me, Internet is meant to be fast. I would rather die in boredom than waiting for pages to load on my smartphone when I’m on the go.  AirTel’s 3G services are definitely expensive, but I have no other choice.  I wish Docomo might have won the 3G Auction in Tamilnadu.

No Ads, Please!!

Some of the things I really hate in life is Ads on my mobile.  AirTel gives me quite a lot of texts regarding its latest offers which I hardly read than deleting it, but Docomo is worse than that. Docomo gives a hell lot of ads, Stupid Push messages and annoying Caller Tune calls.  Even after activating the Do Not Disturb (DND), I find no difference in Docomo’s ad trauma.

iPhone, Anyone?

Being a Die-Hard Apple Fan, I wish to own an iPhone soon.  Being an AirTel user, its easier to switch to an iPhone using the same number because AirTel and Aircel are the only iPhone Providers in India for now.

    Hey dude,
That was a very good write-up i would say.. I was actually thought of porting my current AirTel no to Docomo one, as the latter offers much more features in a relatively lower tariff. (i’m being with Airtel from 2005) But, one thing really need to know, that is – the Network. Airtel does have a strong network, which i dont think Docomo has. However, i’m a Chennaite and this problem wouldn’t lead to a chaos as the mobile signal strength would be strong enough to cater in.. So please suggest whether i can really switch over to Tata Docomo from Airtel, as its nowadays not playing a fair game with its customers.

I would say ‘Yes’, since you live in a metro city, you wouldn’t be having any network coverage issues. But you wouldn’t get 3G though. I’ve tried to port to Docomo from Airtel myself, and within two days, an AirTel operator called me. I was so annoyed with the call, that she did not even respond to my questions properly. I would say that AirTel’s services and customer care are probably the worst now!! If you need cheap call tariff, 200sms/day, blazing fast 2G internet speeds, then DOCOMO is your best bet…

Yeah You Well Said About the Comparison of AirTel With Docomo.. Whatever You said that are all 100 percent matched with my opinion..:-) Yet after 3G of Docomo to tamil nadu. There must be more demand for them. But this is a great business tactics by docomo we know it.. But in the climax ALL are should be the same.. The truth is still docomo collecting the number quantity of Sim’s Customers.. ..

Docomo 2G Edge speed on my Iphone is very good , i hav used Vodafone 3g on the same iphone and find no different in accesing internet applications .
but the network is bit bad at some places, particularly i get No Service when i go to my basement parking in my company .
but guess while in roaming we can latch to other leading networks

Dude checkout Airtel now !!! It’s far better than docomo . Speeds on 2g have increased even now packs are like Rs 15 , 300 mb usage ; 15 days + 750 sms . Earlier i also used to consider airtel inferior but check it out now !

I am thinking whether I should port from Airtel to Docomo now. I have been ripped using a lot of offers to cut my call rates (Rs 46), message (Rs. 44), Internet (Rs. 98).

Do you notice how much of extra recharges we are doing for all those small nifty things that is actually supposed to exist in a prepaid package?

This is too much and I want to know if Docomo is better on that front.

    Thanks 🙂

Tatadocomo has good value in that you get more data for your money… but if you are in any problem…their customer service is non existent.. try calling their customer service centre… u will never get through…
and their service network is not very good.
with airtel at least you get customer service… and u can recharge and change plans whenever you like…

I have using DoCoMo sim for past 6 year I got wonderful internet speed in DoCoMo 2G but facing less problems in network signal in Chennai thats airtel 3G signal strength = DoCoMo 2G strength.
but I like instant VAS activation in less than 1 min. but in airtel it includes morethan 10 mins of activation time period.

With great dissappointment I am going to tell that Idea 3G network is the worst network across India. I can’t able to update my antivirus virus definitions for 101 days. Tata Docomo network is the best network after Voda and Airtel.

Docomo is good compared to Airtel.Airtel only deducts amount from mail account balance without any reason when contacted the customer care they keep giving unnecessary reasons,The customer support of Airtel is very worst.Docomo Signal is bit weak but its okay and we can leave with it.2 months back i moved to Docomo from airtel and I am finding Docomo a good service.

Hey Bhaskar, I wouldn’t recommend you to port to Docomo before doing proper research. You could try to get a duplicate sim if you are using it for a long time. Also check it with multiple phones if you are having problems.
